In this first podcast in the Talk for Memory series, host Wayne MacPhail speaks to Geoff Dean. Geoff, who's 65, is a former book publisher. He had to give up his career to care for his wife, Philma.

They were married 42 years ago, after graduating from the University of Toronto, just two years earlier. But in the '90s, Philma showed the first signs of dementia that gradually worsened.

Their two children live in other cities. Geoff and Philma's sister trade off assisting her day to day.

This was such a moving podcast. My father in law has recently been diagnosed with dementia. He and his partner live in an isolated community, so I have passed this link on to his wife. I think she will appreciate listening to /sharing Geoff and Philma's story. Very well done. Thanks.

Very well-produced and intelligent. I appreciated the balanced and calm approach to such a confounding and saddening subject matter. As a young person it's moving to hear about the evolution of a loving relationship.

My Dad died last year with from Parkinsons and Alzheimer's was beginning to creep in. It was a really sad thing to see. Thanks for reminding folks out there what's going on behind closed doors and some of the options open to aging citizens
